6th Grade IB Design
Mesopotamian Advertisement Project
This project is going to align with your Individuals and Society class. In a few weeks, you will be covering the Mesopotamian time period in history and this project is to help you gain what is known as "prior knowledge." When you have completed this project, you will have gained some knowledge about the topic before the unit even starts!
You have traveled back to the days of ancient Mesopotamia. You work as a graphic designer and a client has asked you to make an advertisement for their service. You have three weeks to get it done.
What is the service? You have to research the jobs and services that were around during that time. It is important to note that the services that are going to be advertised relate directly to the time period.
How do I build the advertisement? You can use Google Slide, Pixlr, PowerPoint, Word or any other graphic interface that you may have.
How do I advertise the service? Use photographs or drawings of artifacts or the actual service of the time period. The rubric asks for at least two photos of directly related imagery.
What are "service attributes"? Service attributes are those little lines of descriptions about the advertised service that separates this particular company from others. For example, "Open 24 hours" is an attribute. "Free donkey parking" is an attribute (see the "good" example below). There should be at least 4 attributes in your advertisement.
Directions to a location thousands of years ago??? Use a little poetic license here. They did not have addresses as we know them today... more like landmarks. However, they did have names of cities and towns, so, make sure the location you choose is directly related to Mesopotamia.
Make sure people can read the poster? Use a font(s) that can be read and seen from afar.
DUE DATE: Originally, I intended to give you until the week of May 14th to complete the current project. Upon reflection, I am extending it out ONE week until the week of May 21st. You must complete the project before as we have another one coming up right behind. I will NOT accept late work for this Mesopotamian ad project.

Cross Disciplinary Project: Science and Design
You will be exploring severe weather hazards that occur across the globe. You will choose your hazard from the list below. After completing research on your weather event, you will create an infographic. An infographic is a hybrid information, image, and graphic presentation that can be printed out or made into an image to be posted on your IB Design website. Your infographic should be created using digital design software such as Canva or Piktochart.
Choose from:
Tornado, Thunderstorm, Blizzard, Monsoon, Flood, Drought, Fog/Smog, Nor'easter, Lake-Effect Snowstorm, Hail Storm, Heat Wave, Waterspout, Sand Storm, Typhoon.
Check list: Make sure that your final product has the following items:
Title with severe weather hazard
Your name and class period on the front
Images of severe weather hazard
Answers to the following questions - These do not need to be in paragraph form. Think of a creative way to display this information. An infographic shares information with the public; think outside the box.
1. How does your type of severe weather form?
2 What conditions are needed for it to form?
3. When and where does this weather event most frequently occur?
4. Is there a scale used to measure the intensity of your weather event?
5. How is your weather event named or classified?
6. What technology is used to monitor your weather event?
7. What are some famous examples of your severe weather hazard?
8. How does one prepare for your weather hazard?
9. What should someone do if they are caught in the storm?
10. What effects should someone expect from this type of storm?
11. What type of clean-up or recovery should be expected after your severe weather event?
Minimum of 2 sources cited at the bottom of the infographic in APA format.

Design Exploration: Week of January 8, 2018
We start a new project today that will be the end-of-the-semester summative assessment.
Using the vast reaches of the Internet and all of its researching tools, your assignment is to explore something that has been designed. It can be anything in the world that was or has been designed. It can be from history, the present day, or it can be something that is designed for the future. It can be in fashion, a product, a graphic design, something from industry, or something that is designed, yet not created. It can be from any place in the world. You may present it as a Google Slide presentation, a PowerPoint, or a written report.
Please include the following information:
Utilize your questiaschool.com account. Each of you have a username and password. Your username is your full CPS email address and the password is 12345 that can be changed in the settings once you get into your account. Also, take advantage of this very comprehensive list of resources available to you, as well. https://ogdenwestlibrary.weebly.com/online-resources.html
Post your project on your IB Design portfolio. The project is due the week of Monday, January 29th with NO extensions possible as final grades are due that week.

NEWS FLASH!! NOVEMBER 6, 2017
Every 6th graders must take a minimum of three selfies and post them on your website. This is for the next project! This starts next week... so ALL sixth graders MUST have their selfies available to use.
Reflection Requirement, November 6, 2017
In addition to the projects, I am going to require another component... reflection of the project and process. You are to create a blog page on your website and add your thoughts about each project and other components of the class that will arise. I will show you how to do it in class. This is going to be part of your grade. I am less interested in how long the comments are and more interested in what you have to say.
Class Update: Week 10
We are at the beginning of our second quarter and these are the milestones that have OR should happen for success in class:
You have a working CPS username and password and are able to connect to your CPS email and Student Portal;
You have created a portfolio website, have published it, and have sent me the URL (the website's address);
You have created your project and have posted it in your website.
You have cleaned up your website getting rid of pages you don't need, removing pictures that don't relate to the site, and have made it "your own."
You have added a "blog" page and have submitted at least one post to it.
You have taken your selfie photos and will have them available to use in class.
We are starting our new projects this week.
Spooky Selfie Project November 6, 2017
Spooky Selfies Project
Using the IB Design Process, you are going to create a Ghostly Selfie!
Using your phone to take the selfies and then running them through some of the effects on PhotoMania, you are to first create some strange and unique portraits. Then using Pixlr, you will create the image. First, you will do a web search and find either a landscape, a cityscape or some other type of image that you will use for the background for your portraits. The rubric asks for three different poses. I will show you how to "clean up" your image and add a transparency effect in Pixlr. Then, you will add a few other spooky components by copying and pasting them into your masterpiece. Put a border around your piece, too... it's all in the rubric. When it is done, add it to your website portfolio. Do NOT share it or email it to me. I want to see it in the website. Make sure to apply the IB Design cycle! I will demonstrate all of the techniques when I see you in class.
The projects are due the week of December 4th. Make sure to put in a reflection piece about the project, as well.
This includes the reflections as well. Make sure you write something about the process and product. This is more difficult than the last project, so I’m sure you’ll have a lot to write about!
As they say in StarWars "Look to the rubric, Luke."

The Album Cover Project
The essential question here is this:
How can I best adapt to random images and text and create an effectively designed album cover?
Yes… you are going to create an album cover, however, all of the pieces are going to be randomly selected and you have to design the pieces in an aesthetic way. Please use the following links for the activity.
1 – You are going to need a name of the band or group. Click here, the title of the first random Wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.
2 – Click here for a random quotation page.
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album. Make sure you remove the punctuation point!
3 – For the album cover image, Go here to get the image. You have to choose the third picture, no matter what it is (providing of course if it appropriate. If you feel that it is inappropriate, it probably is. If so, go to the fourth photo). That will be your album cover. You will not be able to save the image, however, you can “snip it” and save it (I will show you how to do that). Remember, album covers are SQUARE!
Once you get all the pieces together, open up http://pixlr.com. You will use this as your photo editor.
Assemble all the pieces together using pixlr. Use the type tool to get the text in. Change it up! Make it look good.
Upload it to your website using a new page and title the page Album Cover Designs.
Have fun!!!
Project is due two weeks from the time of introduction!
