8th Grade IB Design
IB Design Studio Project
For the next 6 weeks, we will be embarking on the “IB Design Studio.” This endeavor is to allow you time to fully develop and employ the five domains of the IB Design cycle. Each and every step of the cycle has to be evident in the process. Giving this amount of time will allow you to fully explore this option.
You may work in groups of only two, or you may work solo.
You are to design “something.” For example, I have students who are making a poetry book, a hip-hop video, a short movie, a short play, an informational “do-it-yourself’ video about make-up art. These are just a handful of examples.
The object of the studio is NOT to just plop a project on my lap and say “I’m done!” It’s an opportunity for you to develop your idea in stages… in short and long term goals.
Each week, I’ll be checking in with you to find out directly from you how your project is progressing. This is going to be part of the final grade.
We will finish up in the third week of May and we'll have plenty of time to present all the projects in class. Please refer to the rubric often as this is going to be graded according to it. You need to show through evidence or through our conversations during check-ins that you are covering each of the five steps of the design cycle.

Water, Water Everywhere...
You will be exploring water depletion and other water crises that occur across the globe. After completing research on your water crises, whether it is from pollution, drought, floods or other related phenomena, you will create an infographic relating what you have learned. An infographic is a hybrid information, image, and graphic presentation that can be printed out or made into an image to be posted on your IB Design website. Your infographic should be created using digital design software such as Canva or Piktochart. Once you have completed your infographic, post it on your weebly IB Design portfolio website.
Choose from:
Drought, Flood, Desalination, Polluted Water, Governments holding water to intimidate its citizens, Companies "stealing" water, Agricultural related problems (irrigation related problems, runoff, fertilizers, etc.), for examples. If you have another water related crisis problem that isn't listed here, see me for approval.
Check list: Make sure that your final product has the following items:
Title with water crises clearly labeled
Your name and class period on the front
Images of the area you are researching
Answers to the following questions - These do not need to be in paragraph form. Think of a creative way to display this information. An infographic shares information with the public; think outside the box.
1. According to your research, what is the main reason this problem has occurred?
2. How long have the people been affected by this problem?
3. How do people in the affected area cope with this problem?
4. Is this a persistent problem? Does it occur on a regular basis?
5. What have been some of the symptoms of this problem?
6. What have the local authorities done to help alleviate this problem? Have local authorities actually made it worse?
7. What could the long term solution be?
8. Is there something that the federal governments of that region can do to help?
9. What technologies are incorporated to help stem the problem?
10. What are the inherent obstacles that may get in the way of solving this problem?
Minimum of 2 sources cited at the bottom of the infographic in APA format.

Architectural Design Exploration Project: Week of January 8, 2018
We start a new project today that will be the end-of-the-semester summative assessment.
Using the vast reaches of the Internet and all of its researching tools, your assignment is to explore an architectural building, bridge, tower or any other type of designed structure. It can be a modern building/structure or it can be something from history. It can be any place in the world. You may present it as a Google Slide presentation, a PowerPoint, or a written report.
Please include the following information:
Utilize your questiaschool.com account. Each of you has a username and password. Your username is your full CPS email address and the password is 12345 that can be changed in the settings once you get into your account. Also, take advantage of this very comprehensive list of resources available to you, as well. https://ogdenwestlibrary.weebly.com/online-resources.html
Post your project on your IB Design portfolio. The project is due the week of Monday, January 29th with NO extensions possible as final grades are due that week.

- Who designed it?
- Where is it?
- When was it built and how long did it take to build it?
- Were there any technological advancements that came out of the design of the building?
- What impact did this structure have (if any) on future architectural designs?
- Why did you choose this particular building?

Reflection requirement, November 6, 2017
In addition to the projects, I am going to require another component... reflection of the project and process. You are to create a blog page on your website and add your thoughts about each project and other components of the class that will arise. I will show you how to do it in class. This is going to be part of your grade. I am less interested in how long the comments are and more interested in what you have to say.
Class Update: Week 10
We are at the beginning of our second quarter and these are the milestones that have OR should happen for success in class:
You have a working CPS username and password and are able to connect to your CPS email and Student Portal;
You have created a portfolio website, have published it, and have sent me the URL (the website's address);
You have created your project and have posted it in your website.
You have cleaned up your website getting rid of pages you don't need, removing pictures that don't relate to the site, and have made it "your own."
You have added a "blog" page and have submitted at least one post to it.

World Heritage Project
We are going to start a new project entitled "The World Heritage Site Poster" project. Essentially, the project is making two posters that depicts and describes two World Heritage sites that you choose from a list of over 1,000 different locations. First, chose the two sites, and Using Google Slides, tell us what and where your sites are. Find four images of your chosen site. Put them in the slide and mix up the sizes of the pictures. (See the examples). You can use maps, stamps, or any photo found online of that location. Then, put three facts about your World Heritage sites on their respective slide. When finished, leave the slides in Google Slide and I'll show you in class a real effective way of publishing them in Weebly. There is a rubric and some example projects at the bottom of this description.
When you are completed with the project, make sure that you reflect on it and the process in a blog entry on your website. See me during class or lunch recess if you need help.
YOU ARE TO MAKE TWO DIFFERENT POSTERS FROM TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS.
The projects are due the week of December 4th. Make sure to put in a reflection piece about the project, as well.

Here's our first project of the new year!
Our project is going to be this: Foreign Language Word Book
What this is going to consist of is a Google Slide compilation of at least 5 slides of images from Google Earth/Google Maps that has items in the image identified by a foreign language. The twist is that the language chosen must match the Google Earth Street View country. For example, if you have chosen to highlight the Greek language, than, your imagery must come from Greece or Cyprus. If you choose Japanese, than the images come from where??? Right… Japan. I will demonstrate to you using the computer monitoring system InSight, but the bottom line is that you will be using Google Translate, Google Earth, and Google Slides... it's a Google fiesta. Post it in your Weebly portfolio. The rubric is at the bottom. Due date two weeks from introduction.
