Intergalactic Alien Public Service Announcement Project
Here’s the deal… intergalactic aliens are on the way to Earth. There are hundreds of thousands of them and we are inviting them to live in the United States. They are humanoid beings that have a universal language translator chip in their brain, they walk upright, and look just like us… except for the fact they have purple eyes.
When they get here, they will know nothing about anything that happens on a daily basis.... they won't know how to do ANYTHING! They'll need to be told through Public Service Announcements (PSA) how to do all of the tasks that we take for granted. For example, they don't know how to take money out of the ATM, they don't know how to wash dishes, make a bed, brush their teeth, wash a car, fold laundry, make a pizza, order something online... they don't know a thing! So, your job is to find something that they need to learn and then step-by-step, very succinctly, describe and show them how to do that life skill completely.
I want you to work individually. You have to create a presentation fully and completely describing a life skill. You can present it ANY way that you want… PowerPoint, a poster board, Prezi, iMovie, a website… or anyway that you would like. You need to follow the five steps of the IB Design Process... Investigate, Plan, Design, Create, and Evaluate.
You have to be clear and explain each step succinctly. It shouldn’t be vague. Use descriptive language. Use pictures, drawings, videos… whatever way you believe will best get your point across. You should be able to give these instructions to the intergalactic aliens and they will be able to successfully complete the life skill you described without any ambiguity.
I would like this to be completed by the third week of May so we can have plenty of time to present the finished projects. Refer to the IB Design Rubric often. It's a different rubric that you're probably used to, so, look it over periodically.

The Evolution of Evolving
You will be exploring evolution... not just the evolution of the human race... although you could if you wanted to... this project is for you to explore the evolution of... anything. There is a list of possible topics for research following this. Use your questiaschool.com account if you want to research. Use your full CPS email address for the username and 12345 for the password. After completing research on whatever evolutionary process that you choose, you will then create an infographic relating what you have learned. An infographic is a hybrid information, image, and graphic presentation that can be printed out or made into an image to be posted on your IB Design website. Your infographic should be created using digital design software such as Canva or Piktochart. Once you have completed your infographic, post it on your weebly IB Design portfolio website.
Here are some example topics:
Evolution of humans, evolution of the solar system, evolution of telecommunications, evolution of digital memory storage, evolution of animal husbandry, evolution of stem cell therapy, evolution of the earth, evolution of printing, evolution of computers, evolution of flight, evolution of hip-hop, evolution of stars, evolution of medicine or the evolution of artificial intelligence (just a handful of suggestions). If you have another idea, let me know for approval.
Check list: Make sure that your final product has the following items:
Title with the title clearly labeled
Your name and class period on the front
Images of the topic you are researching. This is going to be critical as there a no set questions to answer. It is a timeline. Research to the best of your abilities a starting point and as the evolution occurs, highlight major events within the timeline of the history of what it is you are researching. I would suggest that you do an internet search of other infographics to get an idea of what it should look like. Your end point should be the current contemporary timeframe. See me during lunch recesses or email me direct for any further questions outside of class.
Minimum of 2 sources cited at the bottom of the infographic in APA format.
Project due the week of March 5, 2018

Designer Exploration: Week of January 8, 2018
We start a new project today that will be the end-of-the-semester summative assessment.
Using the vast reaches of the Internet and all of its researching tools, your assignment is to explore a designer. It can be a modern designer or it can be someone from history. It can be a fashion designer, a product designer, a graphic designer, an industrial designer… anybody that has designed anything is good. They can be from any place in the world. You may present it as a Google Slide presentation, a PowerPoint, or a written report.
Please include the following information:
Utilize your questiaschool.com account. Each of you have a username and password. Your username is your full CPS email address and the password is 12345 that can be changed in the settings once you get into your account. Also, take advantage of this very comprehensive list of resources available to you, as well. https://ogdenwestlibrary.weebly.com/online-resources.html
Post your project on your IB Design portfolio. The project is due the week of Monday, January 29th with NO extensions possible as final grades are due that week.

Reflection Requirement, November 6, 2017
In addition to the projects, I am going to require another component... reflection of the project and process. You are to create a blog page on your website and add your thoughts about each project and other components of the class that will arise. I will show you how to do it in class. This is going to be part of your grade. I am less interested in how long the comments are and more interested in what you have to say.
Class Check-up: Week 10
We are at the beginning of our second quarter and these are the milestones that have OR should happen for success in class:
You have a working CPS username and password and are able to connect to your CPS email and Student Portal;
You have created a portfolio website, have published it, and have sent me the URL (the website's address);
You have created your project and have posted it in your website.
You have cleaned up your website getting rid of pages you don't need, removing pictures that don't relate to the site, and have made it "your own."
You have created a blog page and have posted your first blog entry.
You have taken a selfie and will have it available to use during class.

IB Learner Profile Poster Project
We are beginning a new project called the "IB Learner Profile Wanted Poster" Project.
You are going to create a "wanted" poster that expresses an IB Learner Profile attribute that some of your peers believe you possess.
First order of business is to take a photo (selfie) with your phone (or a friend's phone). You can send it to yourself in an email. Remember, CPS email will not accept an email from an outside domain, i.e., gmail.com, hotmail.com, yahoo.com... any other domain. You can only send a cps.edu e-mail to a cps.edu account. However you make your picture available is up to you... you're going to need at least one selfie for next week's class.
According to the IB Design Cycle, the first step is Investigate. So, in small groups, discuss the IB Learner Profile that you believe your groupmates have and choose one of them. You will then brainstorm and decide on four characteristics that you have that supports the Learner Profile you picked. Then, you will plan and design the look of the poster.
You can create the poster using a word processor, Google Slide, Google Docs, PowerPoint or an image editor such as pixlr.com or PhotoShop. Use the rubric provided for the requirements.
When we do meet, we will evaluate the posters together and you will have a chance to revise if necessary according to the IB Design Cycle.
The projects are due the week of December 4th. Make sure to put in a reflection piece about the project, as well.

My Influential Relative
Each of us has at least one relative that has influenced you, your family, and your community at large, or in some cases, the entire world. Think about someone in your family, an uncle, an aunt, a grandfather, grandmother… anyone in your family. Then, you are to research that family member by interviewing other members of your family!
You are going to need to collect the following information:
Who? Who is your relative?
What? What did he do? What was his/her “claim to your fame?”
When? When did this individual live… what year were they most active in their career/lives?
Where? Where did this individual live? Were there any outside protagonists there that led them to do incredible things?
Why? Why did they do what they did?
How? Did their accolades occur over time, did it happen quickly. How did they leave their mark on you?
Once you have gathered your information, we will create a PowerPoint or a Google slide presentation. Please allow at least one slide per the 6 questions asked. Be creative! Use transitions. Make sure there’s a picture of your individual… even if you have to draw one yourself. I would also like you to use photos that you can collect online that relates to each of the slides topic (who, what, when, etc.). I've attached the rubric for grading again for reference. Use the rubric while creating the work as many of the requirements are going to be there and not here in this email.
When complete, download it from Google Slides as a .pdf and upload it to your weebly portfolio webpage using the file element. We will have some time to work on it in class. The due date is 2 weeks from the day of introduction.
